Owlet Baby Care is a venture-backed startup based in Lehi, Utah, just outside of Salt Lake City. It was founded in 2013 by a team of passionate parents who launched a groundbreaking product called the Owlet Smart Sock. This market-exclusive innovation tracks the heart and oxygen levels of newborns and notifies parents via smartphone if levels leave preset ranges. We’re searching for a qualified individual who is as passionate as us about the Owlet mission to join our Product Development team as our newest Firmware Engineer.

Here’s what we’ll find on our newest hire’s resume:

  • A background and skill set that stands out above our other candidates
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electronic engineering
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in engineering with embedded systems
  • Expert-level experience with C and device-level programming
  • Proven knowledge of firmware programming tools – IDEs, programmers, debuggers
  • Experience in bare metal environment (with no OS)
  • Experience working with TI MSP430, SiliconLabs EFM32, STMicroelectronics STM32
  • Experience with programming ARM or ST Microprocessors (CORTEX-M Series)
  • Proven knowledge of basic firmware concepts (i.e. interrupts, registers, memory management, microprocessor architecture, process scheduling, RTOS, peripherals, GPIO, ADC, Timers, PWM, etc.
  • Track record of quickly learning company systems and new technologies
  • Proven knowledge of hardware interfaces, communication protocols, and embedded sensors (i.e. GPIO, SPI, UART, DMA, 12C, Accelerometer, Temperature Sensor, etc.)
  • Experience working in pre-existing architectures
  • Experience with embedded security practices and encryption
  • Experience with power consumption management and optimization strategies
  • Experience with low-power wireless protocol implementation (i.e. BLE stacks)
  • Experience with the AT command protocol
  • Experience with fast debugging with the use of scopes, JTAG Debuggers, etc.
  • Experience with version control (svn or Git)
  • Experience with writing detailed documentation

Here’s how you’ll help fulfill Owlet’s vision with this role:

  • Maintain and enhance existing features
  • Create detailed release documentation
  • Maintain ownership of the firmware and system architecture through hands-on prototyping and implementation
  • Develop embedded firmware in C that implements what you define while meeting deadlines
  • Cross-functionally participate in product design specifications, development, verification, performance analysis, troubleshooting and delivery of high-quality embedded firmware
  • Deliver resilient, robust, and durable designs
  • Collaborate with project managers to establish and follow processes
  • Participate in regular code reviews
  • Mentor junior firmware engineers
  • Meticulous and detailed oriented on individual and group projects
  • Individual contributor on an excellent engineering team. Must be comfortable working independently as well as in a team.
