Scientist / Senior Scientist (Assay Development) at Diassess
Emeryville, CA, US

As a Scientists, you will be responsible for planning and executing materials compatibility and stability testing for our rapid diagnostic device and will be responsible for the design, development, and clinical evaluation of several different assays for infectious disease testing. You will apply knowledge of materials chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular diagnostics to assist in the design, development, and evaluation of our rapid test.

About Us: Diassess is a startup striving to transform the way infectious diseases are diagnosed. We are developing a disposable home-use test kit which yields results within 30 minutes. This technology bypasses centralized medical lab testing and streamlines patient care. Our current areas of focus include respiratory diseases and women's health.
Our Vision: Healthcare costs are 18% of USA GDP, 30 million Americans are uninsured, and in some regions of the world, healthcare is nonexistent. Our company is addressing these problems by making medical diagnostics more affordable and more accessible. Ideal candidates will share our vision and passion for improving healthcare in the U.S. and around the world.

    • Experience with material compatibility and stability testing for diagnostic devices;
    • Experience in designing and performing molecular assays, such as nucleic acid amplification assays like PCR or proteins assays like ELISA, and operating lab instruments such as thermocyclers, sequencers, plate readers, liquid handlers, etc.;
    • Experience with nucleic acid analysis techniques such as gel electrophoresis, capillary electrophoresis, sequencing, and have an understanding of different DNA detection modalities such as molecular beacons, intercalating dyes, etc.;
    • Experience with bioinformatics tools such as BLAST, Geneious, CLC, 4Peaks;
    • Experience with drafting GXP-compliant SOPs, validation protocol and technical reports and working together with the internal quality group and outside partners (CROs, CMs, Regulatory, Quality);
    • Program and write scripts for data analysis; MATLAB, Python, R, ImageJ, etc. You know that code doesn’t really look like what they showed in the movie, “The Matrix.”
    • Ability to form interpersonal, professional relationships and can display socially and professionally appropriate behavior.
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written;
    • A rock-solid understanding of molecular biology, organic chemistry, materials chemistry, and biochemistry. Often we do not know the answers to development problems and we have to seek out information in literature. You’ll be able to do this too and it’s OK to say “I don’t know.”

    • You’ll have a Masters or PhD in materials chemistry, bioengineering, biochemistry, molecular biology, or related field and have demonstrated technical experience and competence.

Experience & Training

    • Candidates will ideally have 2+ years of experience solving challenges in materials chemistry and/or complex multi-step assays. Experience in the analysis and interpretation of large data sets preferable. Experience in molecular diagnostics is very favorable. Title to depend on level of experience.

Work Activities & Conditions

    • You have worked with molecular biology assays and you know that sometimes setting up a reaction can take prolonged periods of time sitting in a chair and using a pipette. Don’t worry though, we like to run, dance, climb, and drink coffee when we are not sitting down.
